The first place-name "Sochi" is found in the records of the Turkish traveler and statesman Evliya Çelebi, who visited the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus in 1641. However, the author gave this name as the name of the mountains, not the populated locality. In the same work among the peoples inhabited the Black Sea region, he mentioned a tribe of Socha.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Sochi began to develop as a resort. The first resort of Sochi "The Caucasian Riviera" was opened in June 1909. In 1917 Sochi was granted the status of a city. The civil war slightly slowed down the development of the city, but after it was ended, Sochi continued its development as the all-Union health resort.
